TYPES OF POSTER
sINGLE SIDED
Studios produce single-sided and double-sided posters. Single-sided posters only have printing on the front side, with a white back side.
Both single-sided and double-sided posters look impressive when presented in a lightbox—increasing colour contrast, depth and detail in both cases.
DOUBLE SIDED
These cinema posters are displayed in lightboxes. The use of double-sided printing—to create a reverse version of the artwork on the back—gives a stunning life-like look and depth to a poster when light is placed behind it. The movie industry experimented with the concept of double-sided posters for movies as far back as the 1950s. Several major movies, such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961 and Zulu in 1964, were released with double-sided posters.
UK QUAD
A UK quad (quad) poster measures 30″ x 40″ (762mm x 1016mm)—this size was originally called the quad crown. Posters in this size and printed DS give a good indication that they are original and most probably from the movie’s official cinema advertising poster campaign.
UK quad was one of the first sizes in which cinema posters were issued. Its full name “quadruple crown” has been the standard-size UK cinema poster for many years. (The quadruple crown name comes from the paper industry and describes a sheet that is four times the size of a crown sheet [measuring 15″ x 20″].)
Lenticular
Lenticular (also known as lenti) is a specialised printing process that produces a depth and look similar to that of holograms. The multi-step production process combines a number of images to create an animated effect. The image requires movement and in some cases direct light behind the poster in order for the viewer to see the change. Lenticular posters are primarily used in lightboxes, which produce a fantastic moving/life-like image. Where holograms look incredible when lit correctly, lenticular posters look great in almost any kind of light and the stereoscopic effect is dramatically increased when back lit in a lightbox.
AMPS
Many posters are produced are called AP and AMP and come in many sizes but are generally 24″ x 36″ [609.6mm x 914.4mm]). Referred to as an alternative movie poster, collectors abbreviate this term to AMP/AP. The more expensive posters in this size are normally works of art issued by the artist themselves in collectible numbered or limited editions.
These posters can be printed on many different materials and paper types, and sometimes use specialized inks and techniques from an officially licenced artist of the subject matter or movie. Depending on the substrate, materials and inks utilised in the production of a AMP/AP poster, the effect will differ in lightboxes. If the paper has some transparency you will see enhancements to the overall art, but do note that some methods of production will negate the backlighting effect.
MAXI Posters
Maxi prints (24″ x 36″ [609.6mm x 914.4mm]) work very well when illuminated. These can be found in many retail outlets and have little collectible value as they are mass-produced and with no special printing techniques.
